“Imitation Gold” sounds like a verdict separating genuine from counterfeit. Yet the song’s measure is not an objective test of purity. It is a mind still using an earlier relationship to assess someone new. The present person is in view, but differences from another keep appearing.

MAKOTO. performed Momoe Yamaguchi’s song in the exploratory round of MBN’s Korea–Japan King of Singers. The official clean video carries an April 9, 2024 broadcast date. The compelling entrance is a person holding two periods of life together uncomfortably.

A mind noticing differences

Yoko Aki wrote the original words and Ryudo Uzaki composed the music. Sony Music identifies it among Yamaguchi’s 1977 hits. At its centre is a habit of comparison that outlasts a relationship. Someone new can be close while the mind retrieves an older scale.

This is unfair to the present partner. However considerate he may be, he cannot become another person. The tension concerns whether the narrator’s attention truly faces the present. Beginning a relationship does not automatically alter the way the past is read.

Where the word counterfeit points

Declaring the new love counterfeit on the title alone makes the situation easier: a bad partner could explain everything. But the comparison does not begin with his wrongdoing. An unchanged internal standard may be giving the present person that name.

The title’s sharpness then returns to the speaker. She has entered a relationship without changing her measure. Awareness of that divided position makes guilt possible. Being truthful about a feeling and behaving fairly towards someone do not necessarily coincide. The character becomes more complicated than a straightforward figure of heartbreak.

A character carried by MAKOTO.

The self-exploration round introduces a performer through one song. MAKOTO brings a character who measures a present partner against the past onto the stage. Unfairness and remorse coexist in the voice of someone whose heart remains elsewhere.

What remains is less a new partner’s failure than something the narrator cannot change. The judgement of imitation exposes not only its target but the mind holding to an old standard. Returning from MAKOTO’s cover to the original lets that uncomfortable gaze be heard through another voice.

Revisiting the stage, consider the small unfairness behind the brilliant title: requiring the person beside you to reproduce someone from the past. The enduring question concerns how to change the eyes looking at a new love, rather than how to certify it as genuine.
