WORKRe:RoadFORMATSong review

Walking again in Miyu Kanou’s “Re:Road” does not mean making a fresh start after neatly resolving the past. Looking back still reveals sadness, and words heard long ago can continue to hurt. The song does not require those traces to be discarded before moving forward. Wanting to cherish time that cannot be erased sits beside gratitude for someone present. The impetus to begin comes from a current encounter rather than a break with the past.

Released on May 30, 2025, the song has lyrics by Miyu and music and arrangement by Taiki Nishimura. In its official introduction, Miyu says she wrote it for fans newly met through Trot Girls Japan and for those supporting her since her child-acting years. That gives it a background of addressing people who entered her path at different times. The explanation makes the recipient of her thanks concrete, but need not confine the song’s addressee to the single category of fans. There remains room to think of someone who remembers the road traveled together.

If sadness is also part of the road traveled

Recollection here does not work like an album containing only pleasant scenes. Precious memories return as tears, alongside words that left wounds and a past that will not disappear. Beauty in a memory and comfort in remembering are separate things. Wanting to cherish the past therefore reads as an attitude still desired rather than serenity already achieved. It is a wish to stay beside one’s own time without rewriting it as something that was always fine.

The title’s suggestion of walking again changes here too. Rather than returning to a starting line and rewriting everything, someone meets the next day in a body that has already traveled. Wanting to walk a little better than yesterday has the small scale of daily life rather than a promise of grand victory. Moving forward does not have to reject the former self. That distinction creates the kindness in “Re:Road.”

Wanting to give thanks and wanting to sing

The wish to thank someone sits close to the desire to sing in this place. Neither becomes an excuse for the other. Wanting to continue singing makes the listener matter; having a listener makes the place to sing concrete. Miyu’s mention of people who began supporting her at different times connects that relationship to lived time. Someone who waited for years and someone newly arrived become listeners in the same present.

Hearing gratitude only as a statement after completed success can obscure the longing that remains. The narrator also notices a habit of seeking what is missing. Wondering what would be enough meets the recognition of someone already close. A place to sing then approaches not as a reward granted after reaching a higher position, but as a place containing someone to whom the speaker wants to speak now.

From a present encounter to a future promise

Asking whether someone will remain close in the future contains both hope for continuity and anxiety about what cannot be guaranteed. Having received support does not automatically secure all the time ahead. Gratitude therefore addresses the past while also speaking to a future relationship. Placing a promise to fulfill beside the current encounter shows the present of someone who still has something to do, rather than closing the accounts on days already passed.

The road in “Re:Road” is not a straight line that determination alone can complete. People who passed by and people who stayed, hurt and gratitude, form its different stretches. Rather than arranging everything into a single success story, the song gives weight to the moment of meeting again. A listener can think of receiving encouragement and of waiting for someone else. The reason to walk again moves closer to a relationship worth continuing than to an instruction to travel farther.
