On December 13, 2024, “DJ KOO SPECIAL DJ NIGHT!! vol.1 with sis” brought together DJ KOO, a leading figure in Japan’s club scene and leader of TRF, with trot unit sis, attracting attention in Korea and Japan, at Tokyo’s Za Gran Tokyo (Gran Hama).

Placing exchange across generations, genres and borders at its center, the collaboration combined DJ culture with live performance and clearly showed both artists’ direction and synergy.

Advance reservations gave audiences seating with food and drinks. Combining music, dining and conversation created a different atmosphere from an ordinary concert, and audiences could continue enjoying the afterglow without moving after the show.

DJ KOO, a symbol of Japanese club culture

DJ KOO began activities in the late 1980s and marked his 45th DJ anniversary this year, becoming a leading figure in popularizing Japanese dance music and club culture. Drawing on long stage experience as TRF’s leader, he guided the evening with assured DJing across genres.

Disco- and house-based selections naturally increased immersion. Changes of pace between tracks created both the tension and release characteristic of club performance.

sis: new possibilities above a DJ set

sis is a trot unit expanding its activities between Korea and Japan. This collaboration was a testing ground and turning point for exploring how to extend its musical color on a DJ-based stage.

Both performances centered on vocals and movement, adding contemporary sensibility to traditional trot emotion. Atmosphere and structure differed between the two sets, allowing audiences to experience distinct textures.

Whenever DJ KOO’s classic DJing met sis’s contemporary vocals, the room responded immediately. Many impressions conveying the atmosphere were shared on social media afterward.

The format and the room’s atmosphere

The show crossed the boundary between club party and live performance. Although seating was provided, people responded naturally to the music and enjoyed the whole event as one party.

Positive assessments of the pairing continued afterward, with many responses expressing satisfaction with the musical balance and immediacy the two artists created.

What the collaboration left

The event was completed through the encounter of a DJ representing Japanese club culture and artists of a new generation. Beyond a one-off occasion, it can be seen as a starting point suggesting diverse future international collaborations.

The experience and sensibilities accumulated in their respective fields crossed naturally onstage, giving the event significance as a collaboration worth recording for its deep impression on audiences.
