“Makenaide” urges someone onwards from its title. In a competition it is easy to hear only a wish for victory. Yet a relationship exists between the person saying it and its recipient: even when someone runs alone, another person is thinking of them.

KANO MIYU performed ZARD’s song on episode 13 of MBN’s Korea–Japan Top Ten Show, broadcast on August 20, 2024. A familiar encouragement enters a contestant’s voice. Who sends the words, and who receives them, matters alongside their force.

Who runs, and who speaks?

An encouragement song readily brings the advancing person to mind. Its speaker, however, watches and addresses that person. Sharing the road physically is not required to offer closeness. Remembering only an athletic image can leave half the relationship out.

The inability to walk someone else’s path marks encouragement’s limit. Speaking despite knowing that limit also defines its role. Words cannot guarantee an outcome, but can alter the feeling of being alone. That distance gives the brief title something lasting to consider.

A competition’s title and a song’s title

Other performances and contests follow each song in the programme. Within that frame, the title can look like a request to win. But the speaker’s concern cannot be converted entirely into points. The competition and the relationship inside the song proceed differently.

Keeping the distinction allows Miyu’s stage to be more than a forecast of victory or defeat. A singer takes responsibility for words that can be offered to someone else. The viewer may receive them, or think of someone they wish to encourage. One title can travel in several directions.

A familiar sentence arriving again

ZARD’s official record lists the song as its sixth single, released January 27, 1993. Izumi Sakai wrote the words and Tetsuro Oda the music. A long history precedes the 2024 cover. Even a song apparently known from its title can reveal a relationship inside a sentence on another hearing.

Each new voice brings the song to a present listener. Encouragement remembered from Izumi Sakai’s recording connects with another face in Miyu’s performance. Older words meet a new listening moment, renewing the relationship of remaining beside someone at a distance.

Look beyond the title’s instruction to the person behind it: someone who does more than demand another effort, remaining emotionally nearby despite distance. This is the space of encouragement the cover opens again.
