KANO MIYU’s “Over Drive”: towards a summer that will pass

Karaoke song codes
The summer of “Over Drive” refuses to remain a scene observed from stillness. It invites movement and pursuit. Hearing only a bright anthem of freedom misses its awareness that cherished things can disappear.
KANO MIYU performed the song in the first episode of MBN’s Korea–Japan King of Singers, broadcast April 2, 2024. This was a setting for introducing contestants’ voices. The original’s complicated summer makes the song she carries more interesting to consider.

Present sensation before a future goal
The song does not itemise what someone should become. Summer and movement establish sensation first. Travelling need not be only a means of conquering a destination. Temporary freedom can arise from being in motion now. The title’s propulsion suits that present.
Reducing the song to a lesson in fulfilling dreams makes its language too orderly. Its appeal extends beyond a person progressing according to plan. An unsettled heart can move, and an unexplained sensation can be followed. This room exceeds a tidy success narrative.
Brightness aware that things vanish
Written by YUKI and composed by TAKUYA, the original was released June 19, 1995. It recognises that good days, relationships and even songs may not retain their form. Its brightness need not belong to someone who has never lost anything.
Knowing an experience is temporary can make it clearer, as a finite summer sharpens attention to light and air. Movement becomes more interesting beside impermanence. Freedom can mean keeping hold of present sensation even with sadness.
A song introducing a voice
Sony Music identifies “Over Drive” as a breakthrough single for the band. Its appearance in a Korean programme’s first episode also moves band repertoire into a solo contestant’s selection. A familiar song helps establish an unfamiliar singer’s first impression.
The song chosen for an introduction gives a voice a context in memory. Hearing the band’s recording alongside Miyu’s broadcast performance reveals how one song creates first impressions across different times and vocal settings.
Revisiting Miyu’s performance, consider its song beyond a measurement of brightness. Movement tries to hold the present while recognising that it will pass. This summer suggests wanting to go further because it will disappear.
