Yoo Jae-suk and Lee Juck’s “As One Says”: between two empty audiences

The song carries a memory of empty seats. After a festival audience leaves, two performers remain and sing. A quiet confession at the end of a large event shows that a song reaching many people need not begin before a crowd.
Created for Infinite Challenge’s 2011 festival, the Drooping Snail song returned in Hangout with Yoo’s 2020 at-home concert. iMBC identifies it as Yoo Jae-suk’s early-career story made into lyrics by Lee Juck. Empty audience places sit beside the song across those stages.
A story after people leave
Festivals are generally remembered as times of gathering. People laughing, applauding and anticipating the next act establish a performance’s scale. This song begins after that gathering. Its remaining words sound different from a call to attract more people, making space to hear one person’s past closely.
An absent audience does not automatically certify sincerity. It does, however, separate the scale of words from the number hearing them. A small beginning can travel through broadcasting. Two participants in a large event can also have lived through times difficult to discuss publicly.
A title voiced by someone who could not believe
The title might suggest a confident assurance. Its background in remembered uncertainty places it somewhere else. Someone who passed through disbelief tries a different way of speaking, without beginning from possession of every answer.
This complicates hearing it as a formula for success. What matters is a movement from being unable to trust one’s own words, rather than a guarantee that positive language produces positive outcomes. Accepting optimism without erasing earlier doubt leaves uncertainty as more than a defect to correct.
Different reasons for the same empty place
The April 4, 2020 programme responded to pandemic cancellations and physical separation. Those empty seats differed from seats vacated after a festival. People could want to attend and still be unable to gather.
The listening conditions changed even as the song returned. The 2011 memory centres on two people after the audience has gone; 2020 brings to mind listeners in separate places beyond the screen. Empty seats can become a surface connecting other spaces through a broadcast.
Together the stages alter the title. One person’s decision to try believing in words eventually rests beside someone else’s anxiety. A song need not answer every difficulty to offer a voice that has passed through a hard time. What renews with another performance is the place from which its words are heard.
