Pentaport 2023: A Daytime View of Songdo in the Heat

At midday in Songdo Moonlight Festival Park, water and shade felt as necessary as music. Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival ran from August 4 to 6, 2023. This field report looks back primarily on the daytime experience of attending it.

Beside people standing toward the stage were others resting as if at a picnic or browsing merchandise. Even inside one festival, ways of listening and waiting differed. Songdo’s wide outdoor space accommodated those movements together.

The city behind the name Pentaport

“Pentaport” is more than a festival brand. It literally means five ports, originating in an urban-strategy concept joining Incheon Airport, Incheon Port, an information port, a business port and a leisure port. It symbolically presents Incheon as more than a harbor: a city through which people, logistics, information and culture move together.

The history is longer than one might expect. It began with Triport Rock Festival in 1999, with a planned lineup impressive even today: Deep Purple, Rage Against the Machine, The Prodigy and Dream Theater. Record rainfall canceled the event, leaving an almost legendary story. It returned as Pentaport Rock Festival in 2006 and continued to become a symbol of Korean rock festivals.

The location also changed several times, passing through a Dongchun-dong site, Dream Park’s lawns and the Ara Waterway at Jeongseojin before settling at Songdo Moonlight Festival Park. That change mattered. Songdo’s broad, open urban structure suits large outdoor performances. Access improved substantially with the opening of Songdo Moonlight Festival Park Station on Incheon Metro Line 1. A rock festival could now be reached by subway alone.

Daytime stages amid a heat wave

The 2023 festival ran for three days, August 4–6. Korean artists including Kim Yuna, The Black Skirts, Cherry Filter, Chang Kiha, Car, the garden and LEENALCHI joined international bands on the lineup.

The day of the visit was hot enough for an extreme-heat warning. The park offered little shade by day, and even the wind felt hot. Parasols, hats, water and cups of ice sat beside people waiting for performances.

Even as music played, spectators searched for shelter from the heat and took rests. Time spent listening intently near the stage alternated with stepping back to recuperate. The outdoor listening experience depended not only on stage programming, but on the temperature and space for rest.

Moving between the stage front and resting areas

People focused on performances, sitting down to rest and browsing merchandise occupied the same park. Unlike a venue where one watches an entire performance from an assigned seat, positions and forms of participation varied.

An urban festival connected to a subway station

Walking from Songdo Moonlight Festival Park Station to the grounds was a defining spatial feature. People staying overnight and those visiting for a day from the metropolitan area could gather at the same stage.

Visitors arriving with friends mixed with those coming primarily for music. According to their interests, they spent time listening or exploring booths.

A long stay resembling camping and the act of visiting an urban performance overlapped in one space. What stood out was not one prescribed viewing method, but people moving between performances and rest.

The landscape left by a daytime visit

A record of daytime attendance cannot assess the nighttime stages or every lineup performance. What it captured was the sight of audiences listening, resting and returning toward the stage even in intense heat.

A summer outdoor performance needed both a stage delivering music and space where audiences could spend their time. Movement in search of water and shade, and the coexistence of places for concentration and rest, showed Pentaport’s daytime landscape in 2023.
