LEE MU JIN’s ‘Coming Of Age Story’: missing the present before it ends
An unsettled today imagined as a scene we may treasure later. Coming Of Age Story offers people without ready answers a rhythm to move with, rather than a celebration of youth already perfected.

Songs about youth can contain two clocks: the unsettled present, when we do not know what we will become, and a distant future from which those years look beautiful. LEE MU JIN’s Coming Of Age Story, titled 청춘만화 in Korean, watches both at once. It anticipates missing a moment that has not yet passed. A trace of sadness is therefore present inside its brightness from the beginning.
Released October 7, 2024, as the title track of the mini album 만화 (滿花), it feels closer to someone finding a direction from inside youth than to someone calmly recalling it. The person remains uncertain but does not want the present to become merely a period to endure. What moves that feeling forward is less a grand success story than the momentum of a song.
Before experience becomes a beautiful scene
Youth shines easily when viewed from outside. A small worry can occupy an entire day for the person living it, while someone looking back may remember a handful of good photographs. This song does not simply erase the difference. The prospect of a good memory sits beside the fact that the present has no ready answer.
The comic-book image in the Korean title can be read as a frame placed around that time. It need not mean that life was neatly plotted from the beginning. Someone who cannot see the next scene still belongs inside a story of their own. If a future self might remember today differently, present imperfection need not immediately be called failure. Its optimism begins with that amount of breathing room.

A rhythm that will not leave the feeling still
Calling Coming Of Age Story merely a comforting ballad misses its movement. It does not remain in the act of explaining a worry; it moves toward the chorus’s broader melody. Passages that feel close to sorting thoughts through speech alternate with phrases that stretch the feeling outward. Even hesitation acquires a direction.
LEE MU JIN’s vocal connects those different scales. It retains an everyday familiarity while opening the song’s field of view as the melody expands. Brightness then feels less like evidence that every concern has been solved than like energy to move while carrying those concerns. The song does not wait for an answer before setting out. It allows the next thought to arrive along the way.
Encouragement that does not live your life for you
LEE MU JIN wrote the lyrics. The stance that matters here is the closeness of someone speaking from a shared stretch of time, rather than the certainty of an outsider summing up another person’s life. The song can broaden its emotional scale without immediately reducing an anxiety to something trivial.
It is easier to approach when it is not treated as an instruction that youth must always be enjoyable. An unhappy day can remain part of one’s own story, and time can continue without proof that every moment was lived well. The expansive chorus feels less like congratulations reserved for finished people than encouragement for those still writing their story.

From music video to live performance
The selections begin with BPM Entertainment’s official music video and a live clip from LEE MU JIN’s official channel. Moving from the video’s overall arc to a live performance shifts attention toward the singer and musicians. A familiar chorus can then be followed through the breaths by which the voice enters and leaves its phrases.
A further official upload is titled for the 2024 national concert tour 별책부록, or Supplement. Putting the two live clips beside each other extends listening beyond learning a recording toward following a song through different spaces. Rather than scoring which version is best sung, look for the setting in which the same song feels closest to you.

Do not turn today into the past too quickly
Songs about youth are skilled at retrieving beautiful memories. The particular appeal here is the small invitation to look at a time that has not yet become memory through those eyes. Even on a day when the present self feels inadequate, a future self might look back with a little less severity.
That need not mean packaging every moment as a keepsake already. The rhythm encourages a turn toward the scenes still ahead rather than a seat inside reminiscence. There is a useful difference between the pressure to perfect today because we may miss it and the wish to see the next scene because the story is unfinished. Coming Of Age Story finds considerable life in that difference.
